The Speaker’s Background and Some Talk Highlights, Ming Wang, MD, PhD:
Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, Ming--a teenager at that time--faced the devastating fate of being deported by the Communist government to the poorest parts of China where he, along with millions of other Chinese youth, would be condemned to a life of poverty and hard labor. Ming learned to play the Chinese er-hu violin and to dance as a way to avoid deportation. A chance meeting with a visiting American professor helped Ming come to America, so in 1982, with $50 and a Chinese-English dictionary in his pocket, Ming arrived in the U.S. and began a whole new life.
While in medical school, Ming became a Christian and since then, his faith has inspired all of his work in sight restoration. Dr. Wang will describe the history of Christianity in China, the prosecutions, and the current status of Christianity (80% are illegal house churches). 95% of the Chinese are not Christians. At a time of tremendous economic growth, people no longer believe in communism. So, Chinese people are in a spiritual vacuum, seeking new moral guidance and code of conduct. He will describe his Chinese Bible Penpal Project, which may possibly help in recruiting a quarter of the human population for God’s kingdom.
